J. Helen Elza

American Bestselling Author · Speaker · Poet · Human Rights Activist

J. Helen Elza is an Appalachian storyteller and bestselling author of faith-based women's fiction and children's books. She defines herself as a compassionate empath and renegade truth-seeker who rejects the conformity of outdated classrooms.

"Every day is a good day when we learn something new."

Elza weaves tales of faith, family, and underdogs from her home — Jacob's Pond — in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee. Her debut novel Rosemillion reached #1 on Amazon and launched The Appalachian Trilogy, now available in fifteen languages.

Raised as the second oldest of ten siblings in Hurst, Texas, Elza's path was never conventional. She became the first female process server in five southern Los Angeles counties, worked as an assembly line technician, legal administrative assistant, and long-haul truck driver — crisscrossing the U.S. and Canada in a Freightliner Classic XL. Throughout those years, writing called to her persistently.

Drawing from her thirty-year marriage to a man from "W" Hollow in Greenup, Kentucky — neighbors to the legendary Jesse Stuart, Kentucky's poet laureate — Elza vividly captures Appalachian life. Her stories explore survival, faith, love, community resilience, and the quiet strength of mountain people.

In late 2014, a phone call changed everything: "We just delivered a newborn. You have 72 hours to pick him up." At sixty-six, Elza set aside her writing schedule and raised a child entirely on her own. Now, with her son growing into a young man, she joyfully returns to full-time writing.

Elza's mission is simple yet powerful: to deliver unforgettable narratives that readers don't just read — they experience.

Writer … Interrupted

On loss, love, and a joyful return to the page

In late November 2014, as I eagerly planned my wedding and sketched out a fresh writing schedule, a phone call from a Nashville hospital changed everything. "We just delivered a newborn," the voice said. "You have 72 hours to pick him up, or we'll turn him over to the state."

At sixty-six, I left behind the title of fiancée — and my carefully planned writing routine. I drove toward Nashville alone, realizing halfway there that I had no car seat, no bottles, no diapers. Nothing for a newborn. As a widow with no nearby family, I would be raising this child entirely on my own.

Back in my rural East Tennessee home — an hour from the nearest city, on six-and-a-half acres with a one-acre pond that demands constant care — I juggled full-time work, two dogs, one cat, two ducks, one mischievous raccoon, and an endless parade of wildlife visitors. The writing schedule didn't just change; it vanished.

Raising a newborn to age ten brought relentless, unpredictable challenges: sudden illnesses, school runs, gardening in the rain, pond maintenance through every season, and the quiet strength required to do it all solo.

Now, with my son growing into a young man, I joyfully return to full-time writing. Finding Family — the third and final installment of The Appalachian Trilogy — has a fresh cover and a name that truly captures its heart. Miracle is relaunching for readers eight and older. More changes, new stories, and audio books are on the way.

Thank you all for walking this unexpected, beautiful journey with me. I'm thrilled to be back.

Blessings, — J. Helen Elza
